Entertaining Angels

Sunday I was blessed to meet several new people who had been strangers to me previously. A few of these were homeless or near homeless. One man was named Michael, whom I picked up in Northwest OKC on the way to church. He was carrying a gas can and thumbing for a ride. I watched another person pass him by and felt prompted to stop and offer him a ride (I don't' always do this and I don't feel obligated to pick up every hitchhiker--but I try not to pass by those I believe the Holy Spirit has pointed out to me). He was most appreciative because his gas can was heavy; he was just trying to get back to his car a few miles ahead. I shared I was on my way to First Church and as I dropped him off he said, "Have a great day at church!" I thanked him and told him I would. I think we both brightened each other's day.

During worship, I met a couple named Ron and Linda at the altar. I had seen them before and was privileged to get to pray with them. I trust they felt God's love as they were being prayed for by me and others.

The last person was named Sean. He came to first service and heard about an Emmaus Potluck Dinner after second service, so he stayed and asked me if he could eat with us. I told him, "Of course," and then sat with him at his table to hear some of his story. I didn't meet all of his requests, but we did enjoy a good home-cooked meal and conversation together.

We are positioned downtown to minister in an unique way to the homeless of OKC, along with other nearby churches. I'm thankful for all who feel welcomed and loved at First Church, especially those more marginalized in our society. I've never had to live on the street or wonder where my next meal or shower would come from, but I did give my life to a homeless man--one "who had no place to lay his head" and I'm so glad I did. Aren't you?

In Christ's Love,
Mark

P.S. - My son Matt and I were watching the conclusion of the movie Bruce Almighty this week. Throughout the movie there was a homeless man standing on the street, with a homemade cardboard sign with many different sayings, usually misspelled. In one of the closing scenes, his face morphs into the face of the "God" character (played by Morgan Freeman). I was struck by that revelation. "Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it." (Hebrews 13:2) Blessings! Have a great week!

P.S.S. Here is a note we received from one of our recent attenders...

Dear Friends,

By the time this has been read to you, I will be gone. I know that at times it can be so hard to say goodbye. But still never the less, I wish so say thank you for the love and acceptance all of you have shown during the hard moments of my life.

I appreciate also the financial support given to me during the preparation of my move to Tucson. Know that I pray for you all and in Christ I love you all, always.

May God's mercy shine upon all of you from this day forward.

With thanks,
Robert Stacey

Dear Pastor Mark, what a wonderful journal entry! Sometimes Bo and I have been blessed even more my those "stangers" than been a blessing to them! There have been times of eye-opening moments when I see their struggles (and remember I really don't have any) and also see their courage (which I lack too often). I love to look into a stranger's eyes and let them see the love of God. Thank you for reminding us to always look for an opportunity to minister!
We are so blessed to have you as our Pastor!

I wonder if this is the homeless Robert I have met. I have run into a Robert many times at church service,Sunday School, the library and the park. He was really appreciative of the treatment he had received.

The homeless that show up at Celebrate Recovery are amazed at the reception they receive and the wonderful meal served before meetings. Also the time before church and Sunday School and Church. It has never failed that I see Bo approach and sit and talk with the homeless visitors. Awesome...
