Live Life Today

Mark McAdowI had my first “annual physical" this morning since moving to OKC. I followed all the doctor’s instructions and will know the results in a week. I feel great, especially because nothing was mentioned about my weight (I didn’t ask of course either)! Annual physicals are important, primarily in preventing more serious illnesses. Lab tests can point out areas of concern we otherwise might not be aware of or ignore. I don’t enjoy going to the doctor, but I do enjoy being healthy! Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit (I Cor. 6:19), so they deserve some TLC, and in some cases, an extreme makeover!

Our Mayor, Mick Cornett, is getting a lot of PR for encouraging us as a City to lead a healthier lifestyle. First, it was the announcement of his goal for us to collectively lose a million pounds and yesterday he launched a “walking initiative” – I think the Mayor may be listening to First Church sermons online! Seems I recall talking about walking just last Sunday. By the way, did you get to take a walk with the Lord this last week? I sure hope so! I believe that physical, spiritual, and mental/emotional health are tied together. It’s so hard to keep each area balanced, but when we do, life is better!

I’ve been listening this week to a Willow Creek CD based on the book by Kerry Shook, One Month to Live: Living a No-Regrets Life. He challenged his church staff, and now his readers, to live as though they had only one month to live and by so doing, live as Jesus did. Here are the four principles he gleaned from Jesus’ life:

     1. Jesus lived passionately
     2. Loved completely
     3. Learned humbly
     4. Jesus left boldly.

If we adopted those same principles I wonder how different our life might be? It’s worth thinking about. The days of our lives were ordained by God before even one came to be (Psalm 139:16). We’re not promised tomorrow – just today. Live your life for Jesus today!

I’m looking forward to Sunday and the beginning of World Outreach Week. Come be blessed and stretched!

Yours in Christ,
Mark

I think that the weight loss goal and initiative for OKC is a great step and a trend that I hope that other communities across the nation can adopt more rigorously. I kind of hope, on a lighter side-howver, that they'd pick another animal such as a zebra or hippo for the icon of weight loss that has taken place so far. Nothing like seeing 15 Republicans and more being added to the Oklahoman Daily! ( Lots of Laughs! )

Having experienced my own "check-up" this week, I couldn't agree more. I find I often spend time striving for that balance when I just need to stop and yield to God's will. Thanks for calling us to accountability.

Hey!! Tom them der Democrats...would make a better candidate for weigh loss...LOL..

My pastor, This book is applying part of the New Testament where Jesus teaches that you can only deal with one day at a time. He says that each days have its own difficults..and not to wear about tomorrow.. We at time get so caught up with worrying about tomorrow borrowing the fear that is none existent.

The annual checkup is like us reviewing our lives and taking account of what we have done, where we fall short, and what we could have done differently.

Mr. Carnegie of Betheleham Steel would keep a notebook of what he had done for the day, the week, and review it months to see how he could make changes in his life. His journals were of a man that had a limited education, but was determined to improve his life.

I am very glad that you have done well with your physical.
