The Greatest Thing

Last Sunday I shared about the world's most beloved prayer, "The Lord's Prayer." We looked at it phrase by phrase and actually shared it aloud together three times: we read it once and prayed it twice. I trust your appreciation for this great prayer is growing again. Another well known and loved prayer is "The Serenity Prayer." Though I was familiar with the short version, I did not know the complete prayer until I saw it in the Celebrate Recovery material. I thought you might enjoy reading the complete prayer as well.

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardship as a pathway to peace; taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will; so that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with You forever in the next. Amen." (Bold added) - Reinhold Niebuhr

I'll close today with one of my favorite prayer quotes from S.D. Gordon...

"The greatest thing anyone can do for God and Man is pray. It is not the only thing, but it is the chief thing. The great people of earth are the people who pray. I do not mean those who talk about prayer; nor those who say they believe in prayer; nor yet those who can explain about prayer; but I mean those people who take time to pray."

I want to be one of those "great people," don't you? Join us this Tuesday evening at 6:00 in the sanctuary for a continuing time of praise, worship, and prayer. "You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with your whole heart."

Blessings!

Mark

Whenever Jesus talked about prayer, he put it with the grand simplicity of a child:... September 16, Daily devotionals of Oswald Chambers, "My Utmost for His Utmost". I try to remember to come to him as a little child, his child...

The Serenity Prayer has been an integral part of my life for years. ...especially ... to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I thank God today and everyday for bringing a pastor like you to our church.

Mark,
I'm sorry I wasn't at church to hear your sermon since I am at Ft. Hood, TX with my son. I appreciate your printing the whole serenity prayer. We have been attending a Celebrate Recovery program at a church here and it is such a blessing! We definitely plan to get involved in ours when we get home. It was embarrassing to tell the people here that we have CR at our home church but we haven't been participating in it!
Blessings!
